T21 VISITING ARTIST - LIL BUCK

We created the illustration to the left to advertise Lil Buck's first solo dance show in NYC, produced and directed by Damian Woetzel on April 2nd, 2013.  As it turns out, they didn't need much advertising.  The two shows sold out in a matter of minutes and went on to earn LIL BUCK the BESSIE Award for "Outstanding Performance" 2013.  (The Bessies are the New York Dance and Performance Awards.)

Lil-Buck is one of the top practicioners of the Street Style "Memphis Jookin'" but it was his decision to take advantage of a scholarship to join the Ballet classes at a local Memphis studio that opened him up to experimentation & eventually got him noticed by Dance luminary Damian Woetzel & Cellist Yo-Yo Ma.  The rest, as they say…well, you know.

A few days ago Lil Buck joined forces with the brilliant Wynton Marsalis for a live performance on CBS This Morning.

Since we first posted this page several months ago, a host of new Lil Buck videos have dropped.  We've added them to the page below.  Here's a shot from fashion photog/cinematographer Jacob Sutton's wildly popular "A-Z of Dance" ad for Diesel Jogg Jeans and i-D Magazine.  Buck holds down the "M." (full vid at the bottom of the page)

February of 2014 Lil Buck joined forces with famed Street Artist JR and the NYC Ballet to create a multi-faceted project which included photography, a major art installation at Lincoln Center, and a new ballet for the NYC ballet which Lil Buck choreographed with JR.  Here are a few of the amazing images from prep and rehearsal period of this ground-breaking project. The work premiered in early May to rave reviews!

MORE CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
Lil Buck's past 2 years have been a whirlwind of top-drawer gigs, from the cast of the top grossing international tour of 2013, Madonna's MDNA Tour, directly into the most talked-about new show in Vegas, Cirque du Soleil's MICHAEL JACKSON: ONE. In between performances he has found time to appear in films at the request of directors Spike Lee, and Spike Jonze's in his Best Picture Oscar nominated film "Her" as well as several short dance films created for him by noted dancer/choreographer Benjamin Millipied (Black Swan, Paris Opera Ballet.)  Legendary 20th Century composer Phillip Glass composed a new piece for Buck and Yo-Yo Ma for the NYC solo show.
(Below) Lil Buck first burst onto the International scene when this YouTube video of his performance of Saint-saens "Dying Swan" with Yo-Yo Ma went viral. Noted film director Spike Jonze was the first to release the video to the public.

(Below) Lil Buck accompanied Yo-Yo Ma and Meryl Streep to Bejing as part of the US-China Forum on the Arts and Culture. Videographer Ole Schell created this 20-min documentary about Buck's journey from Memphis to the China.

(Below) Another milestone in his skyrocketing career was the selection as a cast member of Madonna's record-setting MDNA Tour in 2012/13, which kicked off on the world's largest stage, the Super Bowl. Lil Buck was brilliantly costumed as the wing-footed messenger god of music, Hermes.

Lil Buck has also become a beloved figure in the world of Fashion.  His trademark moves graced large billboards coast to coast for GAP, for whom he also shot several videos as part of their 2012 campaign. (Below).  GQ Magazine has also featured him in several editorials, with accompanying videos (2nd video below)

Top fashion photographer Jacob Sutton employed the classic Fred Astaire "Dancing on the Ceiling" technique in this collab with Lil Buck for Nowness.com.

We've created a few other illustrations for Buck over the past couple of years. (Below)
We've been looking forward to working with him in an expanded capacity so we're definitely excited about this opportunity to bring him to Tulsa on this very important date to share his talents with our city!
